This Grand Prix is a timely reminder of the motoring adventures that put Argentina at the very forefront of racing in the first part of the 20th century. The Turismo Carretera of yesteryear, where your brand made its first foray in motorsports and in people’s consciousness, were the very expression of the human soul at its best – the same one that broke the sound barrier and put men on the moon – a spirit of “no limit”, whether natural or man-made.
And that’s what the GP recreates, thanks to the organizing efforts and teams from the Fundacion Roadbook. Across 2,100 km of wilderness through several of the northern provinces of Argentina, often not even surfaced, 50 racers (and friends) try to best one another. If it sounds like a dandy pursuit, then you won’t be surprised to learn that Willy, the vaunted Dandy Driver, was at hand to showcase that he too as that Suixtil spirit – in spades. Outfitted in indefatigable Mechanics overalls along with a Nassau polo that was also put through the wringer, Willy – who had clearly demonstrated his unique qualities as a driver, certainly strived to put the dandy vibe forward, come rain, shine or (mostly) dust… And let it be said that it was also great comfort to note that several of the baquets chose to follow Willy’s example and sported the Suixtil colors too – you can never be too cautious when it comes to currying the favors of the road Gods, can you?
And because we mentioned the moon and the landscapes, it should be said that some parts of the races looked like it could have taken place on the moon, if the moon had overgrown cacti, vicunas, alpacas and other assorted lamas (do we have it covered or what?) and cloudless skies instead of a sea of tranquility. But you’ll be the judge of all that: luckily for us, Willy and his friends brought back many a great shot, that we have compiled, pele-mele, here for your viewing pleasure.
Enjoy it all and don’t forget to let us know what you think – at life speed!
